Logo Design

Seafront Cocktail Bar

THE BRIEF:

The aim of this design project was to create a logo for a new seafront cocktail bar. Located on a tourist high street opposite the harbour, the bar would specialise in high class cocktails at an affordable price. The target audience of the bar would range from young adults to older adults. The main unique selling point would be affordable drinks - not having to pay a premium price for the location.

ABOUT THE BUSINESS:

Although starting out based on cocktails the business would like room to expand in the future; the design must not just represent cocktails. Future plans include entering the food sector and creating links with local vendors to produce locally sourced food. Once catering for food the bar would open during the day and welcome families but still open in the evening to cater for the lovers of cocktails. For this reason the logo must be diverse and recognisable for each target audience.

KEY POINTS:

 - Please make the logo simple and transferable

 - Please provide your design journey

 - Please provide some alternatives for use within the brand (menus)

 - Simple yet effective

“Great Drinks, Great View, Great Price”

I set myself this project after completing a few online graphic design courses in order to practice the skills I had gained during the courses. I first decided that wanted to try a logo design and then discussed with my family what kind of business I could design for. After spending a lot time by the beach over the years and also enjoying a cocktail I decided on a seafront cocktail bar. I then brainstormed some ideas and buzz words that represent the sea, the beach and cocktails. I then found some images on the internet and created a moodboard of those images. I imported some images into Illustrator as templates and used the curvature tool to redraw the images and create vector shades of these ideas. I experimented with colour and line weight and different backgrounds.

I then decided to see what some of the ideas would look like if I put them together and on top of each other. I found that the anchor and wheel worked best. I then played around with the arrangement and line weighting and decided the anchor at the front with the thicker line and the wheel behind with a thinner line looked good.

Following the brief I created some other ideas using the same design for use across the business. I thought that the Martini glass design could be used on the drinks menu, the summer cocktail glass could be for the cocktails and the coconut cocktail could be used for promotional drinks and specials. I also thought the Seahorse could be used for the food menu once the business was ready to expand, and the crab could be used for the Kids menu. Depending of the location of the bar I also thought the palm tree and hammock design could be used within the bar to direct you to outdoor seating or a beer garden.

I really enjoyed setting myself this brief as it got me to really think about what the uses and importance a logo holds. Also using the skills learnt for a real world project helped experiment with lots different tools that I would necessarily use for a bit of fun. For this project I looked into writing a design brief and the key information a client needed to provide to write a brief.

In the future I would like to test out mock ups and create a promotional poster for the bar to then expand my knowledge of graphic design and promotional campaigns.
